  1. Your article was very good. I am doing a paper for grad school (Jewish-Christian studies at Seton Hall) and this helped.
We just went to a seminar at the Heritage Museum in N.Y. and the director of Wansee spoke. Their website is very interesting.

    • Thanks for your post. I’m glad that it helped. The Holocaust remains the worst genocide against a religious group in history. Only by learning to value the differences among us can the world become a truly wonderful place to live. The best weapon against prejudice and genocide is education and collaboration. To that extent, I’m glad that you are doing a paper on it. If I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to ask.

  2. According to the U.S. Census of 1830 a majority of Southern Jews owned Black Slaves. Ira Rosenwaike, a respected Jewish authority who has published Jewish population studies, has revealed that as many as 75% of the 322 Southern Jewish households held Black men, women and children as slaves. Rosenwaike is quoted on page 180 of the book, The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews. ” In Charleston, Richmond, and Savannah,” he continues, “the overwhelming proportion (over four fifths) of the Jewish households contained one or more slaves; in New Orleans over three-fifths were slaveholders; in Baltimore, less than one-fifth.” Nationwide, “probably close to two-fifths of the Jewish families of 1820 owned slaves…”

    • And this has what to do with the Holocaust? Until the end of the 19th century, it was deemed appropriate for anyone to own servants. As a matter of fact Christians owned far more slaves. Want to dig deeper? Jews were slaves from ancient Banylonia and Egypt through Greece and Rome. They were tortured and murdered. Christians murdered millions of Jews in the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the English Expulsion and The Reformation. But that too is a different subject. Like your comment, it is non-sequitur here.

Perhaps you can find a blog devoted to slavery or the US Confederacy, which went to war with America in order to keep their slaves. This blog is about the Nazi genocide against Jews, Roma, homosexuals, the mentally challenged and political prisoners. Good luck searching for a blog about slavery.

    • And so did Christians and Protestants. What does this have to do with our topic, the Holocaust? The only connection I can gather is that Nazis used Jews as slave labor, in support of their military conquest and for the benefit of German industrialists. The vast majority of Jews taken from their homes in Europe were murdered immediately upon reaching a concentration camp. Only those deemed strong enough survived to become slaves for the Third Reich. Thanks for bringing us a connection with the fact that strong Jews were slaves in Nazi-occupied Europe. Women, children and the elderly were taken directly for special treatment (code for “gas chamber”). Funny how one could be considered “lucky” to be a slave. Of course, many such Jews desired death, rather than ongoing life without their loved ones, who had been murdered.

  3. Ok…let me ask you this….

Do you support the Jewish Defense League?

    • Only in cases like yours. You should know that you are not the fist person to cal me, “Christ-killer.” Nor will you be the last. I feel sorry for people like you. It must be difficult living with all of that hate.

  4. You keep beatin a dead horse about all the fucking jews that died…get over it…what about the tsunami and now radioactive world we will live in…get off the fucking jews…besides you all been wanderin for 5000 years

    • settled in Israel more than 3,000 years ago. They never left. This does not constitute a “wandering” people. Would you say the same about Christians or Muslims, who have “wandered” all over the planet in much larger numbers? If some Jews have existed in a Diaspora, it is only because bigoted people forced them from Israel. By rejecting the Jewish people, you have demonstrated prejudice and intolerance.

We must never “get over it” when we speak of genocide. Inaction in the face of ethnic cleansing and mass murder is equally unethical. Whenever someone like you says, “Get off the fucking jews (sic),” the world recognizes you as bigot. You are a part of the problem, not the solution. Are we to love and care for Japanese, but loathe Jews? Do you realize that Israel has been a first-responder to global disasters throughout its history, including the disaster in Japan? Jews from Israel are in Japan today, rescuing natural disaster victims, while you promote hostility towards Jews. Do you fail to see this double standard?

Thank you for your post. Your attitude reminds us why we must never forget the Holocaust and why we must confront bigotry everywhere. Only by confronting intolerance can we redeem our collective conscience and promote the true spirit of humankind.

      • So the many thousands of Christians that were fed to lions for sport…we should never forget about them?

        • Thanks for your comment, Suka. However, I must ask you a question. In what way does the Holocaust reduce the impact of other genocides? All mass murders of innocent people are horrible.

I wrote about the Holocaust in part to honor members of my family who were victims. You are free to write about the murder of Christians by Rome any time you so desire. I certainly would not be offended by it. However, it should be noted that Rome murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews, as well as Christians and Muslims. You should also know that millions of innocent Jews were murdered in the name of Christ during the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the English Expulsion and the Reformation. I mentioned none of this in my book, Jacob’s Courage. Yet, the fact remains that more Jews were murdered in the name of Christ than in the Holocaust.

No ethnic or religious group has ownership over being genocide victims. And while the Holocaust remains the most vast genocide of any religious group in history, it does not diminish the pain that other genocide victims experienced.

Considering what has happened in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur, it is clear than humanity has not lost its taste for the blood of innocent people. We go on with murder and massacre and hatred of all who are deemed different. Only when we learn to value the differences among us will we experience the true spirit of humanity.

P.S. Suka Hatchi, why do you use an invalid e-mail address? Do you have something to hide?

          • Morris, if you’re so bored, why waste time writing a comment? No one forced you to be here. I apologize for deleting your other disrespecful comment. BTW, your spelling was correct (since you asked), but not your punctuation.

  5. Excellent response to that complete ignoramus Iott on the NY Times web site. To think that a member of Congress would have no qualms donning the despicable Waffen SS uniform is unimaginable.

My father was of “the greatest generation” and fought to end the dual threats of facism. My wife is half-jewish, – her father (also of TGG) thought anyone who purchased a VW was beneath contempt.

I will have to buy your book. All the best!

    • Thanks for your post, Jim. My father was a captain in the Army Medical Corps during WWII. He was a psychiatrist and he treated hundreds of soldiers who developed “battle fatigue” (today it is called Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome). My dad experienced the war through these poor men, from North Africa to Italy to France, before being sent to the Pacific Theater. Our fathers (and both of our fathers-in-law) were without doubt the “greatest” generation. To think that someone who wishes to represent my Congressional district believes it’s OK to dress up in a Nazi SS uniform under any circumstances is beyond my ability to comprehend. War re-enactors can do whatever they please. It’s a free country (because of our fathers). But I shudder to think that one of our members of Congress would dress as a Nazi Waffen SS officer. Our leaders should be above reproach in their actions and beliefs. That’s why we elect them – because they should be better citizens, with better values. If Rich Iott believes it is appropriate to honor the Waffen SS by wearing their uniform in public, what else serves as a foundation for his value system?

I’ll depart here with one final thought. In a recent televised debate, Rich Iott and our 28-year Congressional Representative were asked is they would vote for the 1964 Civil Rights Law today. Congressman Marcy Kaptur answered, “Yes,” in a fraction of a second. Rich Iott not only refused to say that he would vote for the law, he refused to answer the question and sidestepped it completely. Our 1964 Civil Rights Law stands as one of the highlights of American lawmaking. This law assures that no American citizen can be discriminated against because of their race, creed, religion or ethnic origin. Two days later, Iott’s campaign manager tried to suggest that his boss really does support the law. Then why not say it in the debate? Instead, Iott and his tea party friends continue to preach that government has no right to tell private businesses and individuals whether they can discriminate. Does this say something else about the values of the man who has Nazi SS play clothes and wants to represent me in Congress?

    • P.S. Jim, I forgot to mention in my reply how generous it was for you to say that you intend to purchase my book, Jacob’s Courage. My reply to your nice thought was somehow lost in my discussion of the Nazi SS dresser who wants to be my Congressman. Please let me know if you any difficulty purchasing Jacob’s Courage. Although I cannot gurarantee that it will be on any particular brick & mortar bookstore shelf, it should always be available on-line at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other Internet retailers. I hope that you enjoy Jacob’s Courage and that you will drop a small but honest review of it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. Thanks again, Jim!

    • Thank you Jim. You are valued contributor.

  6. Dear Mr. Weinblatt,

Thank you so much for leaving such a well reasoned and intelligent comment on the Booktryst blog about books and censorship. Yours was exactly the kind of reaction I was hoping for. Clearly there is more to this issue than a knee jerk response either way. You eloquently stated the case for limiting acess to such distortions of history as those devised by holocaust deniers. I hope your comment gives lots of readers food for thought. It gave me a lot to consider.

I look forward to spending more time on your website, and reading your novel.

    • Thank you Nancy. You are very kind.

Holocaust denial is dangerous. If we allow our children and grandchildren to believe that the Holocaust may not have occurred, they will be in danger of making the same mistakes that created it. Only when we learn to value our differences will humanity mature. Only when we become tolerant of other views, other attitudes and other religions will humanity progress.

I hope that you enjoy Jacob’s Courage. My most fervernt desire was that the book be used for Holocaust education. People must understand the devastation of intolerance, so that we can survive and prosper.

  7. All my blogs are direct quotations from the books presented except in a few exceptional cases, sometimes indicated thus […] In the matter which concerns you: page 22 of professor Ram “Iranophobia”, his opinion as a professor of history at Ben Gurion University. He does not deny that the Islamic Republic constitutes some measure of threat to the State of Israel. He thinks it is exaggerated and has had some bad experiences putting forth his view, one of which I include in the blog. I haven’t finished reading the book but I am interested in his views on the “wiping Israel off the map” controversy. My interest is primarily “Iranophobia” in America. In that regards, professor Ram’s statement is not far off the mark, at least in my experience as someone who has studied the matter since 1979

I have read all Raul Hilbergs’s books. My grandparents sponsored and supported several refugees from Europe and advocated war against Nazi Germany from 1933 on. As dean of undergraduate admissions at Harvard my father help eliminate quotas against Jews. I have Jewish friends. My son is engaged to a Jewish girl. My brother-in-law is Jewish. My nephew has been an employee at the Baha’i Temple in Haifa, my niece is going there for a year in November.

I don’t think you have any ground to accuse me of ‘revising history’, at least to the extent that it is possible to avoid such a thing and write anything at all!

Thanks for your interest, I guess.

    • Hello John. Thanks for your kind explanation concerning my remarks on your site. My issue was the claim that Jews consider Iranians “ignorant” and Ignoble.” Lacking quotation marks, my impression was that you wrote it. Since you have explained that you did not write it, I apologize for suggesting it was yours. However, I stand by my reply that most Jews do not consider Iranians “ignorant” or “ignoble.” The Persian culture dates back to Alexander and Babylonia; it has been at the forefront of science, astronomy, industry, commerce, mathematics and medicine. No person with a modicum of historical knowledge would accuse Iranians of ignorance or ignobility. Nonetheless, Israelis and Jews have every right to be seriously concerned about the military intentions of Iran. Within two years, Iran will weaponize their Shabab II ICBM with a nuclear payload. They already supply Hamas and Hezbollah with short-range rockets that are launched into Israeli cities and towns on a daily basis. More than 4,000 Iran-made rockets have been launched into Israel in the past five years. They have openly vowed that “Israel should be wiped off the map.” The last time a nation called for the death of Jews, six million European Jews were murdered.

I was also concerned with the following statement: “I argue, that Iran has been transformed into a repellent and frightening external other in the Israeli imagination at the same time that Israel’s ethnic and religious “outsiders within” ( or folk devils) have shown Jewish-Israeli modernity to be in a state of crisis, and “not a finished ideal state seen as the culmination of a majestically plotted history.” Iran is dangerous to Israel (and all Sunni-led ME nations). Otherwise, why would every Western power, plus Russia and China, vote for increasingly punishing United Nations sanctions against Iran. The world’s powers do not vote repeatedly for sanctions against innocent, feeble nations. As a nuclear power, along with their stated desire that Israel be “wiped off the map,” Iran would present a destabilizing force in the region; this will lead more nations, such as Saudi Arabia, Syria and Kuwait to possess nuclear weapons. Iranians are anything but ignorant. However, they are led by dangerous clerics who openly desire Israel’s destruction and who militarize their proxies in the region. Iran is not “frightening in Israel’s imagination.” Iran with nuclear weapons is frightening in reality and virtually every world power has agreed with this several times at the UN.

I found the “folk devils” statement absurd. While there are some ultraorthodox Jews in Israel who as dissatisfied with the secular aspects of Israel’s government, it would be incongruous to suggest that this represents a “state of crisis.” This cultural, religious and political dichotomy represents a normal and desired polarity that Israel has successfully managed for 62 years. Israel is both religious and secular, which was the desired culture proposed in 1948. I am aware of no one outside of a tiny block of ultraorthodox who care about it, or consider it a “crisis.”

Thank you for your reply to my comment. Thanks also for sharing your family situation. I never for a moment thought that you were anti-Semitic.

      • The Death of Jesus

For the next 60 seconds, set aside whatever
You’re doing and take this opportunity! Let’s see if Satan
        Can stop this.

        At the age of 33,
Jesus was condemned to the death .

        At the time
Crucifixion was the “worst” death. Only the worst
Criminals were condemned to be crucified. Yet it was
Even more dreadful for Jesus, unlike
Other criminals condemned to death by
Crucifixion Jesus was to be nailed to the
Cross by His hands and feet.

        Each nail
Was 6 to 8 inches long.

        The nails
Were driven into His wrist. Not
Into His palms as is commonly
Portrayed. There’s a tendon in the wrist that
Extends to the shoulder. The Roman guards knew
That when the nails were being hammered into the
Wrist that tendon would tear and
Break, forcing Jesus to use His back
Muscles to support himself so that He could

        Both of His feet
Were nailed together. Thus He was forced to
Support Himself on the single nail that
Impaled His feet to the cross. Jesus could
Not support himself with His legs because of the pain
So He was forced to alternate between arching His
Back then using his legs just to continue to
Breath. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the
        Suffering, the courage.

        Jesus endured this
        Reality for over 3 hours.

Over 3 hours! Can you imagine this kind of
Suffering? A few minutes before He died,
Jesus stopped bleeding. He was simply pouring water
        From his wounds.

        From common images
We see wounds to His hands and feet and even the spear wound
To His side… But do we realize His wounds
Were actually made in his body. A hammer
Driving large nails through the wrist, the feet overlapped
And an even large nail hammered through the arches, then a
Roman guard piercing His side with a spear. But
Before the nails and the spear Jesus was whipped and
Beaten. The whipping was so severe that it tore the
Flesh from His body. The beating so horrific that His
Face was torn and his beard ripped from His face. The
Crown of thorns cut deeply into His scalp. Most men
Would not have survived this torture.

        He had no more blood
To bleed out, only water poured from His
The human adult body contains about 3.5 liters
(just less than a gallon) of blood.

        Jesus poured all 3.5
Liters of his blood; He had three nails hammered into His
Members; a crown of thorns on His head and, beyond
That, a Roman soldier who stabbed a spear into His
Chest..After all of this He forgave them.

For They Knew not What They Did

        All these without
Mentioning the humiliation He suffered after carrying His own
Cross for almost 2 kilometers, while the crowd spat in his
Face and threw stones (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight,
Only for its higher part, where His hands were

        Jesus had
To endure this experience, to open the
        Gates of Heaven,
So that you can have free
        Access to God.

        So that your sins
Could be “washed” away. All of them, with no exception!
        Don’t ignore this situation.

        • Hi “Pappy.” Thanks for your fine forensic dissertation on the death of Jesus. It is most informative, particularly from an anatomical standpoint. Like so many other Jews of his time, Jesus was killed on the cross. But, to his credit, he continued to call himself “rabbi” right to the end. I’m not sure what the death of Jesus from a medical standpoint has to do with this blog, which is about the Holocaust. If, as you say, Jesus “died for you,” he certainly didn’t lift a finger to help his fellow Jews during the Shoah. The only connection I can see is that Rome and Nazi Germany were both prolific murderers of innocent Jews. Since Jews do not recognize Jesus as a messiah, we would not agree that he died for us. But, it would appear that he was a talented preacher. Thanks again “Pappy.” I’m glad you stopped by.

  8. On your website’s list of concentration camps, I found Jasenovac missing. Since Shimon Peres has just visited the site, do you intend including it on your list and telling the whole story thereof (as far as is known, of course; NATO and the EU having recently enabled its virtual obliteration)?
Also, since you say that genocides should be remembered, what say you about those who continue the blockage of the recognitiion of the Armenian genocide (and others) within the United States government? This puts Jews and Israel on the spot on this matter, wouldn’t you agree, considering that Hitler used those massacres as a template for plans of his own?

    • HI Bob. Thanks very much for commenting here. While it was not my intent to post all Nazi concentration camps on this site, I am open to adding new camps to the list, such as Jasenovac. It’s also important to understand that while I am a Holocaust researcher, I would not call myself a Holocaust “expert.” That title belongs to someone who has successfully completed a PhD in European History, or a similar professional title in the field of Twentieth Century European history. But, my five years of daily research have enabled me to access Internet sites that professional historians trust. Therefore, I consider my information accurate, if somewhat incomplete.

You are quite correct that Jasenovac was a horrid Nazi concentration camp, policed by vicious Croatian guards. Despite the apparent fact that Jasenovac did not have a gas chamber, tens of thousands of innocent people were murdered there. Among the victims were: between 45,000 and 52,000 Serb residents of the so-called Independent State of Croatia; between 12,000 and 20,000 Jews; between 15,000 and 20,000 Roma (Gypsies); and between 5,000 and 12,000 ethnic Croats and Muslims, who were political and religious opponents of the regime. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. According to the US Holocaust Museum, the Croat authorities murdered between 320,000 and 340,000 ethnic Serb residents of Croatia and Bosnia during the period of Ustaša rule; more than 30,000 Croatian Jews were killed either in Croatia or at Auschwitz-Birkenau. I will add Jasenovac to my list.

ALL genocides are horrific, including the Armenian genocide. I most certainly agree with you that no nation should try to block recognition of this terrible event, including anyone within the US government (Congress). However, I do not agree with your allegation that Jews or Israel are involved in any way in blocking the recognition of the Armenian genocide. Whether Hitler used that event as a “stepping stone” towards his own genocide is debatable. But, I am not aware of any effort by Jews or the Israeli government to block the recognition of it. As far as I am aware, only Turkey has engaged in diplomatic activity designed to block recognition of the Armenian genocide.

Since the Nazi genocide of the Jews of Europe, the world has continued to perpetrate the mass murder of innocents, including genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Whenever we stand up to those who deny or minimize genocide we send a critical message to the world. As we continue to live in an age of genocide and ethnic cleansing, we must repel the broken ethics of our ancestors, or risk a dreadful repeat of past transgressions. We know from captured German war records that millions of innocent Jews were systematically exterminated by Nazi Germany – most in gas chambers. These facts have been proven repeatedly through countless thesis and dissertation research papers. Virtually every PhD in the world will stake their career on known Holocaust facts. Despite this knowledge, Holocaust deniers ply their mendacious poison everywhere, especially with young people on the Internet. Such deniers have only one agenda – to distort the truth in a way that promotes antagonism against the object of their hatred, or to deny the culpability of their ancestors and heroes.

We must do everything possible to tell the true story of the perpetrators of genocide; to reveal the abject terror, humiliation and degradation resulting from such blind prejudice. Displaying the truth about genocide will help to combat the deniers’ inaccurate historical revision. We must protect vulnerable future generations from making the same mistakes. On this very site, I displayed dozens of links to sites beyond doubt, proving that millions of Jews were murdered in the Shoah. Still, the deniers fail to listen. They are motivated by intolerance.

Thanks again, Bob, for your comments. I will add Jasenovac to my list of Nazi concentration camps. And, for the record, I’m with you on acknowledging the Armenian genocide. No nation should try to deny it.

      • Thanks for your concise reply, “Benny.” You are entitle to your opinion.

  9. Thanks for sharing the links.

  10. Dr. Weinblatt,
We appreciated your comment on our student’s Podcast. It was very rewarding to know it is reaching out to the community.
